The document lists such directors as Woody Allen, Akira Kurosawa, Martin Scorsese, Wong Kar-Wai and Werner Herzog as auteur. I can at least vouch for Wong Kar-Wai, having seen almost his entire flexography. If we are judging these directors from the description that David Sharp (BFI) gave, Wong Kar-Wai is easily recognisable, using heavy uses of colour in his films, the same camera techniques (his almost stop-motion shot appears in almost all of his films). So if the auteur theory is judged around that, then Wong Kar-Wai is definitely an auteur. The wikipedia article classes the Auteur Theory as the 1950s-era auteur theory holds that a director's films reflect that director's personal creative vision, as if they were the primary "auteur" But surely, a director s personal creative vision is a very vague explanation, leaving the auteur theory open to all directors. I will also be taking a closer look at Quentin Tarantino and his films, and examining if he should be given the title of an auteur. I will also be explaining where and when the Auteur Theory was first created, what the criteria for defining a director as an auteur is, the advantages and disadvantages of being labelled an auteur and if there was any reason why such a title would stop the director from achieving his own style in films. The first subject that I will examine is where the Auteur Theory was founded. According to their Wikipedia article on the subject, the Auteur Theory draws on the work of Andrщ Bazin, co-founder of the Cahiers du cinщma, which was a French film magazine. Bazin argued that films should reflect a director's personal vision. This took place in the 1950s-era in France. Auteur Theory had a major impact on film criticism ever since it was advocated by the film director and critic Franчois Truffaut in 1954. This came in the form of an essay, where he discussed auteurism comparing two different French directors. Although there was some criticism on the auteur theory in the 1960s, the theory is still around today, and is often used for such filmmakers as Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorcese, David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino. However, these are largely down to opinion, since there is no official set of guidelines to determine who is eligible for being an auteur. However, there has to be some form of criteria to depict a director as an auteur. According to the BFI s report on the auteur, there is a considerable European traditions that says filmmakers develop recognisable style Nj„tvђ~€мфіЮЄЮvіbіbі" ."џ.
